Introduction
Gujarat is one of the most prosperous and culturally vibrant states in India, which is located on the western coast of the country. Legends like Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel were born in Gujarat, therefore making this state a remarkable blend of vibrant culture, rich tradition, marvellous architecture, sacred places, emerging industries, and astonishing infrastructure. Gujarat is a highly multicultural state with the famous white salt desert of the Rann of Kutch and the majestic Gir Forest, offering a unique combination of natural beauty, rich history, and economic excellence.
Today, Gujarat is considered one of India’s emerging industrial and educational centres, which attracts students, entrepreneurs, tourists, and investors from across the world.

Historical Background of Gujarat
Gujarat is known for its rich and ancient history of more than 5,000 years. Gujarat was the centre for the Indus Valley Civilisation, and also the renowned archaeological sites Lothal and Dholavira. These sites revealed the advanced town planning, trading channels, and marine pursuits, which show Gujarat was linked to distant regions through sea routes.
Over the centuries, Gujarat was ruled by several powerful dynasties, which include the Mauryas, the Guptas and the Solanki (Chalukya) rulers, under whom the influence of art, architecture and trade propagated all over the state. In the mediaeval era, the Gujarat Sultanate made the region a major commercial centre, attracting several merchants from Arabia, Persia and other parts of Asia. During the 16th century, Gujarat was annexed to the Mughal Empire and later came under the influence of the Marathas and finally under British Rule.
Gujarat was the home state of Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and was instrumental in India’s freedom struggle. After independence, Gujarat was separated from the erstwhile Bombay State and was carved out as a separate state on 1 May 1960. Today, it is known for its fast industrial growth, lively culture and historical heritage.
