Kargil Vijay Diwas Commemoration -
Kargil Vijay Diwas is observed every year on 26th July to commemorate the successful conclusion of the Kargil War in 1999. This year 2025 will mark 26 years. The day serves as a solemn reminder of the challenges faced and overcome during the conflict. It is a time to reflect on the resilience and determination that led to the restoration of peace and territorial integrity.
Origins of the Kargil Conflict -
The Kargil conflict began in the summer of 1999 when infiltrators crossed the Line of Control (LoC) in the Kargil sector of Jammu and Kashmir and entered Indian territory. This infiltration aimed to disrupt strategic connectivity between Kashmir and Ladakh and internationalise the Kashmir issue. The rugged terrain and adverse weather conditions complicated the situation, requiring a well-planned and robust response.
Operation Vijay with a strategic response-
In response the Indian Army immediately launched a well-planned Operation Vijay to respond to the infiltration. A planned military operation was carried out with strong vigilance to retake the occupied territories. Since the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, there have been several military clashes between India and Pakistan. In 1998, both countries conducted nuclear tests, which significantly heightened tensions in the region. In an attempt to defuse the situation and move towards peace, India and Pakistan signed the Lahore Declaration in February 1999. The agreement emphasized a peaceful and bilateral resolution of the Kashmir conflict. However, soon after the declaration, Pakistani armed forces began infiltrating Indian territory across the Line of Control. This resulted in the severing of communication between Kashmir and Ladakh, forcing the Indian army to retreat from the Siachen Glacier.
The infiltrators occupied an area of about 130 to 200 square kilometers, and the Indians realized that the infiltrators' plans were much larger. But India was far ahead in terms of strategy and military numbers. In response to this infiltration, the Indian government responded with Operation Vijay, with 200,000 Indian troops. On July 26, 1999, the Indian government, with armed forces, attempted to expel them from Pakistan-occupied territory and declared an end to the war, and from the following year, July 26 has been celebrated as Kargil Diwas.
