Andhra Pradesh

A Jewel of the East Coast Where Heritage Meets Progress

  1. Introduction:

Andhra Pradesh, the eighth largest state in India, is a vibrant trade and cultural hub on the southeastern coast. Serving as the gateway to South India for East Coast trade, it stands out for its rich heritage, rapid growth, and natural beauty. Known for its delicious cuisine, world-class weaving, classical dances like Kuchipudi, and ancient temples such as Tirumala Venkateswara, it blends modern development with history. Its long coastline drives trade, fishing, and port activities, while strong agriculture, industry, and tourism sectors further elevate its importance.

  • State Nick Name of Andhra Pradesh:
  1. Rice Bowl of India – Krishna & Godavari deltas.
  2. Kohinoor of Andhra – Tirupati.
  3. Andhra Paris – Rajahmundry.
  • Date of Formation of Andhra Pradesh: On 1 November 1956, the Telangana region of Hyderabad State and the state of Andhra merged to form the state of Andhra Pradesh.
  • Date of Bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh: In 2014, the state was bifurcated again, and Telangana was recognised as a separate state.

  1. Historical Background of Andhra Pradesh:

Andhra Pradesh has a very rich and ancient history. The Kurnool and Belum caves located here provide evidence of early human settlement in prehistoric times. The region is mentioned in ancient texts as the birthplace of the Andhras. Its evolution began with the formation of the Andhra kingdom and ended with the formation of the present-day Andhra Pradesh. In the past, various dynasties ruled the region and contributed to the cultural and political landscape of the state. Later, the state was ruled by linguistic identity, which united the Telugu-speaking region of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, which was formerly known as Hyderabad.

  • The cultural and architectural history of Andhra Pradesh shows evidence of early civilization and the existence of prominent dynasties such as the Satavahanas, Ikshvakus, Kakatiyas, and Chalukyas, which included the earliest rulers of Andhra Pradesh.
  • During the British rule, the region was part of the Madras Presidency. After independence, the desire for a separate Telugu-speaking state led to the formation of Andhra state in 1953. Potti Sriramulu played a key role in this movement for the formation of a separate Andhra state.
  • Then in 1956, under the States Reorganisation Act, Andhra state was merged with the Telugu-speaking region of Hyderabad state to form the present-day Andhra Pradesh.
